Privacy policy
We built CopyClip so your copy history stays on your devices—not on our servers.
Summary
- Clipboard history is stored locally in your Mac user account.
- If you turn on iPhone sync, recent text clips travel through your own private iCloud database. We cannot read them.
- We do not sell your clipboard data.
- Optional online features (GIF search, license checks, app updates) send only what is needed for those features.
Data stored on your device
CopyClip saves items you copy (text, links, images, files, and related metadata such as source app and timestamps) in Application Support on your Mac. You can delete clips in the app; uninstalling removes the app bundle (you may delete leftover support files in Finder if you wish).
Pro license keys may be stored in the macOS Keychain on your device.
Data we do not collect by default
We do not operate a server that stores your clipboard. We do not receive the contents of your clipboard unless you voluntarily send them to us (for example in a support email you write yourself).
Third-party services
Depending on how you use CopyClip, these services may apply:
- Lemon Squeezy — If you purchase CopyClip Pro, payment and license validation are handled by Lemon Squeezy under their privacy policy. We receive license status needed to unlock Pro features.
- Giphy — If you use GIF search (Pro), search queries are sent to Giphy's API. We do not send your clipboard history to Giphy.
- Sparkle — In-app updates may check copyclip.app for new versions. No personal clipboard data is included in update checks.
- TelemetryDeck — If Help improve CopyClip is enabled in Settings → Privacy, the app sends privacy-preserving product events (for example, which transform actions are used), plus a once-a-day summary of which features are switched on and how much you use them — reported as broad ranges such as “21-100”, never exact counts. We never send clipboard text, search queries, or file paths. You can disable this in Settings → Privacy.
- Plausible — Our website may record anonymous page views and download-button clicks (version number only). No clipboard data is involved.
Permissions
Accessibility — Used only to paste into other applications via simulated keyboard input when you choose to paste from CopyClip.
Network — Used for optional features above (updates, Pro license, GIF search), not for uploading clipboard history.
Browser extension
The CopyClip extension for Chrome and Brave communicates only with the CopyClip app running on the same Mac, over a local socket in your own user directory. It makes no network requests and there is no server behind it. Nothing you copy is uploaded, by us or by anyone else.
The extension stores your own settings — the trigger you type, the shortcuts you map to lists, and whether the inline picker is on. It does not store clip contents. Clips are read from the app only when you ask for them, and a clip’s full text is fetched only for the clip you actually choose.
When you save a selection back to CopyClip, the page’s address is recorded with the clip so your history shows the site it came from. That address is stored on your Mac like any other clip.
Password fields are never filled, and payment card numbers are never placed into a form automatically — only ever by an explicit click from you. You can stop the app accepting connections at any time in CopyClip → Settings → Allow the browser extension to connect, which also removes the browser’s permission to launch the helper.
iPhone app & iCloud sync
CopyClip Companion for iPhone shows the clips you sync from your Mac, and lets you save clips from your iPhone. Sync is off until you turn on Sync with iPhone in the Mac app’s Settings.
When sync is on, recent text clips (with their type, source device, timestamps, favourites and tabs) are stored in your own private iCloud database, using Apple’s CloudKit. That data lives in your iCloud account under Apple’s privacy policy. It is not sent to us, and we have no way to read it. Images and files are not synced. Deleting a clip on either device removes it from iCloud.
The CopyClip keyboard does not ask for Full Access and makes no network requests. It reads only the clips already on your iPhone and types the one you tap. The widgets and the “Save to CopyClip” share extension work the same way.
The iPhone app contains no analytics or advertising, and we collect no data from it.
Bug reports & support
When you use Report a Bug in the app or on the support page, you send only what you type plus app version, macOS version, and whether Accessibility is enabled. Clipboard contents are not included. Reports are delivered to us via our form provider (Formspree).
Children
CopyClip is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
We may update this policy as the product changes. The effective date at the top will be revised when we do. Continued use of CopyClip after changes means you accept the updated policy.
